The elephants arrived early in Southland, with Oreti Beach producing good fish. Most baits have been working well when fished on a running rig with bait buddy, but pilchards and squid seem most popular.
For optimum fishing, I recommend fishing from half tide on the incoming, with 6/0 hooks and a 5oz breakaway sinker. A good trick is to have the trusty bell on the rod because these fish, when they stampede, hit hard and fight like hell.
Eles produce the best surfcasting action in this neck of the woods, and put up quite a display when hooked. They often break the surface and porpoise, so watch for that distinctive fin. They are bloody good eating when fresh too.
