Seabird Awareness – with many people out enjoying their fishing over the Christmas break please give a thought to seabirds and how you can avoid capturing them. If you do catch one – do you know what to do to release them safely and your reporting requirements.
Poaching impacts everyone – not just the people who are caught . You need to know what fisheries areas are closed and you need to know what catch limits are. A recent capture saw a group of people ( I’m not calling them fishermen) taking catch from a closed area off Kaikoura ; taking masses more than daily catch limits (in other areas – this area was completely closed) and with many of those caught being undersize. What’s even worse, allegedly one of those caught made a gesture towards his knife belt suggesting he wasn’t stopping. All of us out enjoying the coast over the holidays need to do our part by understanding and following the rules and by calling out those who aren’t .
