Match the hatch!!

When what’s in their belly looks suspiciously like what’s tied to your leader….you know your doing something right!

Fish eat what they know!

Just like trout fishing, where you match the fly to what they are feeding. The same can also apply to sea fishing.

Whilst jigging I noticed small schools of juvenile leather jackets darting around below the boat. This was a prime opportunity to scout my jig collection and see if I had something that matched the same profile and size of these fish.

I opted for the 160gm Oceans Legacy Rovan, Aqua Rainbow slow pitch jig.

Proceeding to fish various depths of the water column the moment shortly arrived when the jig was stopped in its tracks.

Boom! Fish on!

This beautiful big john dory was successfully fooled.

After a decent fight on the light gear the prize fish was on deck.

Upon inspection of the gut contents at filleting time I noticed a juvenile leather jacket in the stomach.

Clearly the jig successfully mimicked the leather jacket perfectly!

Always consider “matching the hatch” where possible.

It could be the difference between catching that prize fish or coming home empty handed.

Tightlines!
