Nox and Sol Somnium, our grandsons from Dunedin, love their fishing and cannot wait to get on the water when visiting in Motueka during the school holidays. Heading out toward Abel Tasman, there is always plenty of excitement and anticipation in the air. Not to mention chatter.
Nine-year-old Nox was quickly in but a little disgruntled to start with. He thought he’d snagged a rock but the heavy weight soon morphed into this sand shark… and his faced morphed into a corresponding smile. He was fishing with a Shimano Kid Stix 551 SP line weight 4-6kg and kahawai as bait and also managed a couple of nice brim (school snapper or pannies) for our dinner.
Eleven-year-old Sol was using the same rig set up and fishing the same secret spot at Adele Island. He is a mad keen fisher who likes to release all the fish he catches so was delighted to release this big fella after an enjoyable battle. The big fat banded wrasse was quite thrilled with Sol’s catch and release philosophy, as well.
