A sketchy idea that began in 2016 has evolved into a fishing themed online apparel shop for local Nelson angler John Leather.
After noticing a shortage of NZ specific fishing graphics in apparel, he decided to put his creative hand towards filling the niche. Developing a range of colourful fishing designs that have been growing in popularity. Reef Monster Designs has evolved from an art hobby to a celebration of Kiwi fishing culture. In Leather’s own words ‘Some of the sayings we have in NZ fishing circles are quite humorous so I’m just having fun with that’. As the name implies, predatory fish are on the menu here. Most of John’s designs feature NZ fish with a few of your favourite tropical brutes thrown in for good measure. Kingfish, snapper,
GT’s, sharks and more. ‘I try to capture their powerful vibe in my work. Nowadays going fishing is not just about getting a feed, but doubles as an opportunity for a bit of subject research’.
