Supercharge your riflescope with a Pulsar thermal clip-on

OPTICALLY SPEAKING

A Pulsar clip-on or front attachment fits onto the front of your daylight riflescope to enable night shooting without the need for a dedicated rifle and thermal riflesight set-up. It is a convenient system that is ideal for general hunting and pest control.

Advantages:

• No zero-shift ensures easy fitting and removal.

• Pulsar clip-ons are supplied with an eyepiece for handheld spotting.

• Magnification is adjusted using the riflescope’s zoom ring.

• A clip-on only adds extra weight when needed.

• The shooter uses a rifle and scope combination that they are familiar with.

Disadvantages:

• A clip-on has less features than a thermal riflesight, such as multiple profiles, point-of-impact settings and reticles.

• Clip-ons are unsuitable for riflescopes with an objective lens bell diameter of less than 36mm, unless forward mounted on to a picatinny rail.

Pulsar offers two thermal clip-on models, the professional level Krypton and the recreational focussed Proton. Both models are supplied with a monocular eyepiece and Pulsar’s new PSP mounting rings. A military style mount is available for fitting to a picatinny rail in front of the scope.

Pulsar Krypton XG50the finest available to civilians

The Pulsar Krypton is fitted with the same TWS Qualified BAE Systems 640×480/12µ MicroIR thermal sensor that is incorporated into the BAE/ Trijicon UTC® XII clip-on that is widely used by NATO ground forces. Obviously, a sensor of this quality ain’t cheap, which is reflected in the Krypton’s price, but you get what you pay for!

The BAE sensor is complemented with a precision ground germanium lens and high resolution AMOLED display for outstanding image detail and a long detection range well over 2000 metres. Recommended riflescope magnification is 2x-6x, though 8x or more is still very useable.

Like its military counterpart, the Krypton is tough and fully waterproof, but with the addition of ‘creature-comfort’ features such as video recording and streaming, a multiple colour palette, easy to use interface, high capacity quick-change battery and magnesium alloy housing. It is at the pinnacle of thermal clip-ons and retails for $7299.00 that includes a monocular eyepiece and PSP mounting set. Supplied battery capacity up to 8 hours.

Pulsar Proton XQ30ultra-compact and lightweight

The Pulsar Proton is small and lightweight, yet packs a real punch with its tough and reliable milspec Lynred 384×288/17µ sensor. An AMOLED display and hyperfocal germanium lens produces a very decent image at ’normal’ shooting distances using a recommended riflescope magnification of 1x-4x, or more depending on target size and distance.

Other features include a high capacity quick-change battery, ergonomic control layout, video recording and streaming, a multiple image colour palette, image amplification and a fully waterproof magnesium alloy housing. The Proton is a very attractive option for shooting pigs and deer at night and on the move. The Pulsar Proton XQ30 retails for $4399.00 and includes a monocular eyepiece and PSP mounting set. Supplied battery capacity up to 6 hours.

Fitting to a daylight riflescope

A Pulsar clip-on is fitted to the front of your riflescope using a Pulsar PSP (Precision Screen Positioning) mounting system that is available in three sizes for objective lens housings of 36mm to 60mm. The supplied monocular eyepiece enables the clip-on for use as a spotter, which is then removed so that the clip-on can be attached to the front of the riflescope.

A robust, high quality riflescope is recommended for clip-on use. Pulsar’s own Yukon Jaeger riflescope is specially designed for clip-on use, featuring a fully waterproof 30mm reinforced body tube that can withstand heavy recoil, knocks and bumps. Precision fully multicoated optics produce a fine image and excellent light transmission. It also has an illuminated reticle dot with multiple brightness settings including a night vision option to aid shot placement. The Jaeger is a great riflescope whether used with a clip-on or not.

Pulsar are currently running a special that includes a free 1.5-6×42 Jaeger compact or 3-9×40 Jaeger riflescope with each Krypton or Photon purchased. That’s a pretty cool deal for an all European made daylight/thermal combo.
