Two hoki and a bluenose

It’s always good to try something new; adds an element of anticipation and wonder—I wonder if there is anything down there! The target area for this little adventure was an underwater canyon about 40km north east of Dunedin Harbour. My brother-in-law CJ and I had no idea what to expect but, what the hell, in for a penny, in for a pound.

We picked 480m as the magic mark and dropped a line with a hapuka rig baited with big chunks of squid. We left it down there. For a long time. Ages. Then we let the Diana electric reel wind it up. It was a long long way. And attached to the business end? A hoki. We’d never seen them before so it was an awesome experience—we had no idea that you could catch them out there.

We finished the day with two hoki and a bluenose.
